Bicentenary 2022

May 3, 2022 by Peter Jackson

In 1820, a group of British hivernants applied to the King of Sardinia (who then ruled Nice from Turin) for permission to establish a protestant place of worship in Nice. This was granted and the foundation stone was laid in September 1821. The building was completed by the following November and the first service took place on Advent Sunday 1822. 2022, therefore, marks the bicentenary of the founding of Holy Trinity, Nice, and this is to be celebrated by a series of events throughout the year.

Sunday 8 May: 1822 Society launch and buffet lunch

The 1822 Society is being formed to recognise those who have chosen to support the church in their wills. The launch of the society will take place before the community lunch which will follow the Eucharist.

Thursday 9 June and Friday 10 June at 4pm: chamber concerts at the presbytery

Margaret MacDuffie (violin) and Joseph Voelker (piano) will present a programme of English and American music. (Accommodation will be limited so book early!)

Saturday 11 June at 4.30pm: a Scottish-style ‘Tea & Dance’

Afternoon tea (including Scottish tea-time specialties) followed by an apéro with light entertainment and an opportunity to have a go at some (very easy!) ceilidh dances.

Sunday 12 June: Bicentenary Sung Eucharist

A festal celebration of the Eucharist for the Feast of the Holy Trinity which will be followed by refreshments.

Weekend 17/18 September: Journées européennes du patrimoine

The church will be open and guided tours will be available.

Autumn (date to be arranged): the history of Holy Trinity

Our resident historian, Richard Challoner, will present a talk on the history of our church.

27 November: Advent Sunday

Further celebrations will take place on and around Advent Sunday to commemorate the first service held at Holy Trinity in 1822.
